About the Temple

The Sree Kurumba Bhagavathy Temple stands in Kodungallur, the old Chera port town near the mouth of the Periyar, once known to the world as Muziris. For devotees across Kerala she is simply Kodungallur Amma, the mother goddess, and one of the most powerful forms of the Devi in the state.

The goddess is Bhadrakali in her fierce, protective form, with eight arms and facing north. She holds, among other things, a sword and the head of the demon Darika. The temple is widely known for the Bharani festival of Kumbham–Meenam, when thousands of devotees in red arrive from all over Kerala, and for the Thalappoli festival in Makaram. On ordinary days it is a busy but friendly place of worship, especially on Tuesdays and Fridays.

History & Aithihyam

The story goes that after Parasurama created Kerala, the land was troubled by the demon Darika, and Parasurama prayed to Shiva for help. From Shiva's third eye Bhadrakali came forth and slew Darika; devotees believe that the goddess of Kodungallur is that same Bhadrakali. Local belief also holds that the place was first a Shiva shrine, and that Parasurama installed the Devi close to Shiva. Five Sri Chakras, said to have been consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya, are believed to be the source of the goddess's power.

Another much-loved tradition links the temple with Kannaki, the heroine of the Tamil epic Silappatikaram. After the injustice done to her husband at Madurai, Kannaki is said to have come to Kodungallur, where she prayed to the Bhagavathy and became one with her. Some accounts say a Chera king – Senguttuvan, or Cheraman Perumal – built a shrine for her here.

In history, the temple was for centuries closely tied to the Kodungallur royal family, whose Raja still has a key role in the Bharani festival. The poojas are performed by Namboodiri priests and by Adikal priests, who have a special right to offer pushpanjali to the goddess. The installation follows an old tantric pattern with Shiva at one end, Ganapathi at the other and the Saptamatrikas in between. The temple has been administered by the Cochin Devaswom Board since 1950.

    Dress code

Traditional, modest dress is expected. Men wear a mundu and usually take off shirts and vests before entering the inner temple; women wear a saree, set-mundu, a long skirt with blouse, or churidar. Follow the temple's current notices.

    Entry

By temple custom and the entry rules followed in Cochin Devaswom Board temples, the inner temple is open to Hindus. Leave footwear outside. On Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays the morning closing is a little later. Follow the temple's current notices.

    Crowds and best time

Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays are busy, and so is the Sabarimala season, when many Ayyappa pilgrims stop here. The Bharani season (usually March–April) brings enormous crowds. Its customs are very old and unlike those of most temples: velichappads (oracles) in red, with swords, run around the temple in trance, devotees sing the traditional Bharani songs, and turmeric and pepper are thrown as offerings. The animal sacrifice once linked with the festival has long been discontinued. After the Aswathy Kavutheendal the temple stays closed for about a week for purification. Families planning a visit at this time should be ready for very dense crowds and police traffic arrangements, and should follow the temple's current notices. For a quiet darshan, choose an ordinary weekday morning.
